Kacey, can you share the pivotal moment that made you decide to go into music professionally?
I've always loved telling stories: I grew up recreating scenes from my favorite TV shows, writing my own scripts, and improvising one-woman musicals for my family. My childhood iPad is filled with videos of me singing songs I made up. When I was ten years old, I was approached by a music producer and released my first single. However, it wasn’t until about three years ago that my focus has shifted from releasing a single here and there to being a professional singer songwriter.
How does your Los Angeles upbringing influence your music, and how has new York City impacted your Artistic growth?
I grew up in Chicago and Los Angeles, so these two cities influenced who I am as a person and consequently as a singer/songwriter. Los Angeles has been a great city to motivate me as it’s a home to many talented people! I'm absolutely inspired by NYC, it's so lively! My art has always been loosely based on my life and experiences so living here as a college student has certainly influenced my sound. The past year has been so exciting but also challenging, demanding, and heartbreaking in its own ways. I feel like I've grown into my independence big time living here and also gained a better grasp on the kinds of relationships I prioritize in my life. I hope, lyrically, my music reflects this personal growth and, sound-wise, the new influences I've picked up and work I've been putting in.

What inspired your debut album, Between the lines?
I wanted to release a meaningful body of work so I worked with 7 incredible music producers to create 12 tracks for my debut album. As the name suggests, the album takes a deep look at all of the underlying emotions and thoughts found “between the lines.” It focuses on all things unwritten, subliminal, and secret. The songs are all about complicated relationships with people, whether that be a satirical critique of the nature of fame, a self-reflection, or a heartfelt message to a lost friend.
Your new release "Right Past Me' is out on all platforms. How did it feel recording the song?
"Right Past Me" is definitely a pretty vulnerable track, a lot more vulnerable than my previous releases, and I'm super proud of how the lyrics tell a pretty intricate, detailed story. It definitely builds upon the theme of growing up and apart from certain people I talked about in the "Nostalgia Haunts Me" EP, but focuses more on the self-reflection behind realizing your own mistakes as opposed to cutting off people who hurt you.

What roles do your personal experiences and relationships play in your songwriting?
I was actually inspired to write this song by a friend who was telling me about how they felt guilty about the end of their prior relationship. It's about the process of getting over a heartbreak and how you can realize that you were wrong in the end but still feel hurt by the fact that the other person has moved on.
Kacey, how does it feel to have amassed over 7 million streams and critical acclaim?
I am excited about people listening to my songs and I am always looking forward to connecting with more listeners.

Out of all your songs, which connects to you the most?
I love my EP, “Nostalgia Haunts Me” because I feel like it really captures a snapshot of my life as a young adult and I think my future projects will continue to reflect that.
